Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil – Bereavement Room

Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil recently unveiled its second bereavement room, located in the children’s ward. The latest of our new look bereavement rooms, created in partnership with EBM Ltd and Space Group, was officially opened by our Founder & CEO, Rhian, alongside the Chair of Trustees, Martyn Sayce, and members of the unit staff. The addition of this room marks another significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to support grieving families.

The opening ceremony was also attended by representatives of the Masonic Province of South Wales, who generously donated £1,500 to support the development of this room. Contributions like that of the Masonic Province of south Wales, along with dedicated support from EBM Ltd and Space Group, have been instrumental in making these bereavement rooms a reality. We are deeply grateful for their support.

Our bereavement rooms are a vital part of the support 2wish & 2wish Cymru provide to families affected by the sudden and unexpected death of a child or young adult aged 25 and under. While no facility can alleviate the grief of bereaved families, these rooms offer a private and comforting space where loved ones can wait for news or gather to say their final goodbyes. These spaces are designed to provide a sense of privacy and solace during the most challenging times, helping families navigate their grief in a supportive environment.

The importance of having a suitable, private area near a child cannot be overstated. During the room’s opening, Rhian shared her personal experience of the lack of such facilities when her son, George died. “When George was fighting for his life, we had nowhere to wait. When he died, we had nowhere to sit. Our wonderful nurse found a space at the opposite end of the hospital, but the walk, with George in her arms, had a profound effect on everyone.” This poignant recollection highlights the critical need for dedicated bereavement spaces within hospitals. Furthermore, Paediatric Ward Manager Emma Probert stressed the significance of being able to provide a designated space for grieving families “This room is so important for families who need privacy at the most tragic of times and where sitting in a room with others is not appropriate and sensitive. This fantastic new room is located away from the clinical ward environment, giving families the peace that they need.”

Thanks to the generous donations and support from our partners and the community, we can provide a dignified and private space for families during their most challenging moments.
