Day One of the climb has begun, as the team take on the first leg of their ascent on Mount Kilimanjaro. Setting off around 7am UK time, (9am – in Tanzania) they boarded their support vehicles and headed to Machame Gate where they would begin walking through dense forest, to their first camp. They will hike for approximately 6 hours, covering a total distance of 11km, and gaining an altitude of 1219m.
At this point, mobile phone service is very limited so we have been informed by the expedition leaders that “no news, is good news”. John Gupta, our expedition leader has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro no less than 30 times, and has knowledge of a few spots where phone reception is limited but somewhat available. We’re so proud of everyone as they taking on this incredible adventure, and know they are in the very safest hands.
