Prayer flags are a common sight throughout the Himalayas. Traditionally used by Buddhists, these bright rectangles of cloth are often seen strung along mountain ridges and peaks and tied in sacred places.
The flags often have depictions of sacred animals including; horses, dragons, tigers, snow lions and the mythical creature, garuda.
The text often seen on these flags, is prayers for the life and good fortune of the person tying the flag.
The different colours of the flags represent the different elements – blue for sky, white for air/wind, red for fire, green for water and yellow for earth.
