Everest Base Camp: 2wish Team Members Take on the Challenge

In October 2024, 14 trekkers will take on the Himalayas, as they embark on their journey to the foot of the highest mountain on earth, Everest!

2wish was created out of tragedy in 2012, after CEO and Founder, Rhian Mannings tragically lost her son George, and then 5 days later, her husband Paul. We provide vital support for those affected by the sudden death of a child or young person so that no one should have to go through the pain of their grief alone.
In recent years, members of the 2wish team along with dedicated supporters, have taken on various mountain treks, taking them that little bit closer to ‘the heavens’ and our loved ones who now reside ‘with the stars’. Starting off on home turf, the first treks took place in the UK with the Welsh Three Peaks, and National Three Peaks challenges respectively. But that wasn’t enough for Rhian, and each time a new challenge was presented, a new destination or peak would be chosen. To date, we have successfully completed expeditions to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Mount Toubkal in Morrocco, and this year, Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas of Nepal.

Along with Rhian, will be 13 other trekkers, including our Bereavement Services Manager for Wales, Helen Thomas, and Fundraising Administrator, Beverley Slocombe. But this isn’t their first experience of scaling mountains in aid of 2wish. In 2022, Helen summited Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. And in 2023, Bev scaled the Atlas mountains of Morrocco.

We asked, Rhian, Bev and Helen how they were feeling about the challenge ahead…

"When I said never again after climbing Kilimanjaro 2 years ago, that lasted 24 hours! I never thought doing such a thing would change my life forever and create a feeling like no other. Morrocco was the same last year so I have resigned myself to the fact that these challenges are here to stay. I can’t wait to climb Mt Everest with such amazing people some of whom understand the pain you feel when you lose a child. We will no doubt laugh and cry but together we are going to have the time of our lives."
Rhian Mannings MBE
CEO & Founder of 2wish
“Trekking to Everest Base camp has always been a bucket list dream of mine. The journey is more than just an adventure, it’s about pushing myself beyond my comfort zone and testing my limits. Training is going well as I prepare for the trip which will be both physically and emotionally challenging. Every step we take is a tribute to the families that 2wish supports. Together we can make a difference, one step at a time.”
Beverley Slocombe
Fundraising Administrator for 2wish
“Trekking to Everest Base Camp is more than just a personal endeavour for me. It’s also a tribute to the resilience shown by the many families we support at 2wish. Every step I take will be in honour of our ‘shining stars’. I thrive on a challenge and pushing myself physically and emotionally will allow me to achieve one of my lifelong dreams whilst raising awareness for the charity. The majestic heights of Everest in the distance will remind me that whilst living with loss and bereavement we can carry our memories with us and make a positive impact. This trek will be a testament to the strength that guides us through the most difficult of times.”
Helen Thomas
Bereavement Services Manager for 2wish Cymru

Explained perfectly by our 2wish trekkers, this expedition, although challenging, will pale in comparison to the challenge our bereaved families face every day. Navigating their way through the sudden loss of a child isn’t a situation many people can relate to but, by taking on this feat of hiking resilience, we hope to raise awareness for those suddenly bereaved. Every penny donated to the Everest Base Camp challenge will help to support not only families affected by sudden bereavement but also those who feel the wider ripple effect of a sudden loss, including classmates, teachers, sports team coaches, and first responders, to name but a few.

We’re confident that the team spirit showed, not only with the 2wish team members but, the group as a whole will help motivate and inspire them every step of the way, safe in the knowledge that they will be making a difference to countless individuals back home in the UK.
