By Day 6, the trekkers were well into the swing of the expedition, reaching a significant altitude of 5000m (16,404 ft). Leaving their base in Dongboche, the trekkers climbed higher than ever for their crucial acclimatisation walk, before descending the mountain for the night. This is a vital part of their training to ensure that they acclimatise to their surroundings and the ever-thinning atmosphere, enabling them to reach their destination in peak physical health.
Despite the exhaustion, they were rewarded with stunning views of the Himalayas – a sight many could only dream of, was all the more rewarding knowing that they were there in support of so many bereaved individuals. The journey has been a true testament to the power of community within the team, and the support they are receiving back home on British soil.
The following day, after battling fatigue, high altitude and steep inclines, the team officially arrived at Everest Base Camp. The culmination of an immense effort and determination from all the trekkers and guides, hiking for more than 8 hours was brought to an incredible ‘peak’ where they took a moment in amongst the celebrations to remember those who are no longer with us, by displaying prayer flags on at the Everest Base Camp monument.
Kind donors contributed the names of their loved ones to be displayed at the foot of this colossal mountain, forever remembered amongst some of the most celebrated mountaineers to have summited Everest.
“Now it’s time for a nice cup of tea!” one trekker joked, capturing the joy and relief to have finally reached their destination, achieving such a significant milestone. This well-deserved rest, back at camp, included a sing-along session between trekkers and local guides – a poignant moment of bonding to top off this incredible achievement, before they descend down the mountain.
With base camp behind them, the team spent their final night on the mountain, reflecting on their mammoth journey. Preparing to return to Kathmandu and eventually back to the UK, they leave with unforgettable memories, stories of resilience and a strengthened commitment to supporting bereaved individuals who need it most.
