A Safe Haven for Grieving Families: New Bereavement Room Opens at Glangwili Hospital
On August 27th, a newly refurbished bereavement room was officially opened at Glangwili Hospital’s Accident & Emergency department in Carmarthen, marking another milestone in 2wish’s mission to provide compassionate spaces for families facing unimaginable loss.
This transformation was made possible through the heartfelt collaboration between 2wish, EBM, and Altro, with Glangwili Hospital continuing to champion our cause with unwavering support.
A Space of Solace in Times of Tragedy
The bereavement room offers a private, comforting environment for families during their most difficult moments. While no facility can ease the pain of losing a child or young person, these rooms are designed to provide dignity, privacy, and a sense of calm away from the clinical surroundings of the emergency department.
The transformation of the space is truly remarkable. Before and after photos reveal a stark contrast from a sterile, functional room to a warm, homely sanctuary. The new design features soft furnishings, soothing colours, and thoughtful details that make the space feel less like a hospital and more like a place of refuge. It’s a safe haven where families can gather, reflect, and begin to process their grief.
A Partnership Built on Compassion
The refurbishment was carried out by EBM, whose ongoing support has been instrumental in helping 2wish deliver bereavement rooms across Wales. Gethin Edwards, owner of EBM, attended the opening alongside his son Noah, and shared how meaningful this work is to him personally.
Gethin’s commitment stems from his own family’s experience of loss and the support they received from 2wish. His dedication to transforming hospital spaces into comforting environments is a powerful testament to the impact of our work and the strength of our partnerships.
We are also deeply grateful to Altro, who once again donated the beautiful wood effect flooring to create a non-clinical feel that enhances the room’s comforting atmosphere. Altro’s continued generosity and belief in our vision is sincerely appreciated.
Glangwili Hospital: Champions of 2wish
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Glangwili Hospital, who have long been champions of 2wish. Their commitment to supporting bereaved families and their collaboration in creating this space reflects a shared dedication to compassionate care.
Senior Nurse Manager Nerys Lewis expressed how the new room will make a meaningful difference:
“It’s a quiet, respectful environment that will help families cope with tragic loss in the best way possible.”
Continuing Our Mission
Since its founding in 2012, 2wish has supported over 8,900 individuals affected by the sudden death of a child or young person aged 25 or under. Bereavement rooms are a vital part of our services, alongside memory boxes, counselling, play therapy, and more. These rooms are now present in every Emergency Unit and Critical Care Unit in Wales, thanks to the support of our partners and the dedication of our team.
We are proud to add Glangwili Hospital to the growing list of facilities offering these essential spaces, and we remain committed to ensuring that no family faces loss alone.
